Here’s something you might want to add to your fitness routine: more people.
It seems one isn’t just a lonely number. Going solo at the gym could be holding you back.
A new study published in the March issue of the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness examined the effects of training in a group, with supervision (i.e. a personal trainer), VS. just getting some advice.
Get ready to pick your jaw up off the floor – the first group lost, on average, 362% more fat over a 4-month period. And in case you were wondering, this was without any diet advice.
WOW! Just WOW!
There are two things to consider here:
- Working out in a group is more effective. You’ve got social support and you’ve got people to hold you accountable. Exercising with others is basically taking advantage of peer pressure – but in a positive way.
- You work harder when somebody is watching you. Another study, done a few years back, revealed that just having a set of eyes on you (not a word needs to be spoken) is enough to push you to work at least 30% harder. Crazy!!
The lesson here is simple – get yourself a trainer and/or find a workout buddy.
